INTRODUCTION

THE PRE-AUTUMN 1967 SET

It was as early as 3rd April 1956 that documentary evidence exists of an experimental BBC-tv 625-line COLOUR transmission with Trade Test Colour Films being transmitted from Alexandra Palace initially, and then Crystal Palace thereafter in the London area only.  These films would appear in the afternoons or evenings after closedown.  The 1956 to 1967 films are listed in the box below. There was a separate schedule to the run-up of BBC-2 from January 1964 to April 1964  which can also be found further down. During these four months the colour films would be interspersed with black-and-white films and feature films to fill the whole day.  After BBC-2 had opened, Trade Test Colour Films cropped up during the evenings and afternoons again, and sometimes for full days if an exhibition or a special colour tv promotion was running.  A full schedule of films each day began on BBC-2 in the Autumn of 1967,  So here are those pre-1967 films…

THE 1964 ONLY SET

These films were only shown in the immediate run-up to the opening of BBC2 between January and April 1964.  A film was shown at 09.15, two films from 10.05 to 11.00, likewise between 12.00 and 13.00, and 15.00 to 16.00. Then there was a batch of three or four films shown from 17.00 to 20.00 (14.00 onwards on Saturdays), which always ended with a feature film up to the close of tests at 20.00.

Colour films that were only “in service” during this four-month period are shown in the table below.

BBC2 IS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

Once the BBC2 programme service officially started on 20th April 1964, all trade test films ceased until 16.00 on Sunday 30th August 1964, when the 625-line experimental colour service showed a couple of Trade Test Colour Films. Films were also shown on the following few nights at closedown. This sporadic screening of films continued at closedown from time to time until Friday 5th November 1965, when a couple of films were shown in the afternoons.

Times then varied considerably right up to the start of a regular schedule from Monday 21st August 1967, ahead of the formal launch of BBC 2 Colour in November 1967.

Here are the normal showing times from August 1967 onwards:

THE COLOUR RECEIVER INSTALLATION FILM (BREMA)

The 12˝ minute British Radio Electronic Manufacturers Association (BREMA) Colour Receiver Installation Film, narrated by Michael Aspel, was shown regularly between 1967 and 1971. The final showing was on Friday 8th January 1971 at 16.30.

During the heyday of BBC 2 Trade Test Transmissions, regular bulletins were put out each day giving television dealers and engineers information about new transmitters coming on air, along with notification of current transmitters and relays being on reduced power or off the air. Information was given about exhibitions and anything else related to the technical development of colour television, as well as a rundown on the trade test colour films being shown on that particular day. Each bulletin lasted on average two or three minutes.

On Wednesday 25th August 1971, Service Information ran for 11 minutes – the longest bulletin known. From 13th January 1975, the number of bulletins was cut to only one a day, a situation that was to remain until the final Service Information, which was transmitted at 10.30 on 23rd December 1982.

During the run up to the introduction of the BBC1 colour service in November 1969, there were also daily Tuning Information bulletins on BBC2. From 10/11/69 Tuning Information was broadcast at 18.15 on Mondays to Fridays until 31/12/70.  In addition, for a two-week period from 17/11/69 until 28/11/69, it was also broadcast at 16.30 on Mondays to Fridays.

THE FORMAL LAUNCH OF BBC2 COLOUR TRADE TESTS

The following table contains a complete list of the films that featured in the regular schedule, first introduced on 23rd October 1967.  It will be noted that a number of them were actually first broadcast much earlier.
